چکیده

In the context of decision under uncertainty, standard gambles are classically used to elicit a utility function on a set X of consequences. The utility of an element x in X is derived from the probability p for which a gamble giving the best outcome in X with probability p and the worst outcome in X otherwise, is indifferent to getting x for sure. In many situations, uncertainty that can be observed on the true value ofX concerns only neighbour values. Uncertainty is then represented by a probability distribution whose support is an interval. In this case, standard gambles are unrealistic for the decision maker. We consider uncertainty represented by an equi-probability over an interval of X . This paper addresses the elicitation of a utility function on X by obtaining the certainty equivalent of an equi-probability over an interval of X . We show that not all utility models are suitable to accomplish this task.

Uncertainty Aversion with Second-Order Utilities and Probabilities

S expected utility theory does not distinguish between attitudes toward uncertainty (ambiguous probabilities) and attitudes toward risk (unambiguous probabilities). Both are explained in terms of nonlinear utility for money rather than properties of events per se, hence, the decision maker displays the same attitude toward all sources of risk and uncertainty. There is ample evidence that real d...

Do Probability and Certainty Equivalent Techniques Lead to Inconsistent Results? Evidence from Gambles Involving Life-Years and Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND Within the standard gamble approach to the elicitation of health preferences, no previous studies compared probability equivalent (PE) and certainty equivalent (CE) techniques OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the differences between CE and PE techniques when payoffs are expressed in terms of life-years or quality of life. METHODS Individuals were interviewed through both CE ...

A solution to a problem raised in Luce and Marley ( 2005 )

Luce and Marley [2005. Ranked additive utility representations of gambles: Old and new axiomatizations. Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, 30, 21–62] examined various relations between mathematical forms for the utility of joint receipt of gambles and for the utility of uncertain gambles. Their assumptions lead to a bisymmetry functional equation which, when the gambles are ranked, is defined on ...

Eliciting Sets of Acceptable Gambles — The CWI World Cup Competition

Elicitation When uncertainties are elicited from experts, they are typically quantified as probabilities. Eliciting probabilities directly from domain experts as precise numbers is often problematic due to a lack of familiarity with probability theory and the absence of a concrete context. Moreover, even some of the most ardent ‘precise’ probabilists agree that imprecise-probabilistic technique...

An Endowment Effect for Risk: Experimental Tests of Stochastic Reference Points∗

The endowment effect has been widely documented. Recent models of reference-dependent preferences indicate that expectations play a prominent role in the presence of the phenomenon. A subset of such expectations-based models predicts an endowment effect for risk when reference points change from certain to stochastic. In two purposefully simple risk preference experiments, eliminating often-dis...
